A New Era

History of Service & Stewardship – Our Clergy

The history of service and stewardship began with the Cathedral’s first priest, Very Rev. M. Andruchow (Memory Eternal) who served the Parish from June 23, 1963 until his sudden and untimely repose in the Lord on June 14, 1975. For a period of time the Parish was served by another priest of what had – by this time – become the OCA (Orthodox Church in America). however, problems arose when the priest refused to use any Old Slavonic or Ukrainian in the Parish, even for some of the elderly (and non-English speaking)founders of the Parish.

For several years clergy from Orthodox jursidictions other than the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Archdiocese of Canada (OCA) assisted in serving the spiritual needs of the Parish. Church archives indicate that finally – unable to obtain any clergy committment from some eleven (11) Orthodox jurisidctions operating in Canada – the Parish petitioned and received a priest from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto, Reverend Fr. Theodore Gove. Fr. Theodore served the Parish from the time of his priestly Ordination in 1982 until December of 1998. With membership having dwindled to just a handful of faithful, the Parish decided to petition the Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto, Canada for a new priest.

At the same time as the petition was put forth to Metropolitan Soterios for a new priest, Very Rev. Joseph (Royer) – who had left the Uniate Ukrainian Catholic Church several years prior – was received into Orthodoxy at All Saints. Although he initially participated as a lay person, he was invited to celebrate Divine Liturgy at the Holy Table, as a priest, with Rev. Theodore Gove, who -it was believed – was acting in accord with the wishes of his Bishop, and was introducing his replacement (Very Rev. Joseph) to the faithful of All Saints.

Unfortunately, at a very confrontational and distasteful Board meeting in late 1998, with Metropolitan Soterios in attendance, the Parish found itself in grave conflict and was forced to withdraw itself from being under the G.O. Metropolis of Toronto. The Board asked Very Rev. Joseph (Royer) to stay on as their priest and he officially began his service and stewardship on the Holy Feast of Theophany in January of 1999.

The present Rector and acting parish priest of All Saints Orthodox Cathedral is Vladyka +Joseph.
